The A5 Spry Automatic OTF Knife

The A5 Spry is TEKTO's everyday carry OTF, the one we would hand to someone buying their first one: a 3.50-inch S35VN blade, three edge styles, an aluminum handle shaped for the hand, and a slider that opens and closes it with one thumb. Here is what each part is for.

Part of Choosing an Automatic

The A5 Spry is TEKTO's everyday carry OTF: a 3.50-inch S35VN blade, a 6061-T6 aluminum handle and 3.49 ounces in the pocket. It is the OTF we would hand to someone buying their first one, and the one many people never move on from. It is built around a few decisions, each made for a reason, and this is what they are.

01

S35VN Steel

The blade is 3.50 inches of S35VN, a stainless powder steel that holds an edge well, resists rust in a sweaty pocket and sharpens without a fight. In an OTF the blade is a straight bar riding on a carriage, so toughness matters as much as edge life, and S35VN delivers both. The Bronze Edition carries the same blade in MagnaCut. Everyday cutting, outdoor work, the box pile at the back door: the Spry's edge is the part of the knife you will think about least.

02

Three Blade Styles

The Spry comes as a drop point, a tanto or a double edge. The drop point is the all-rounder and the right first choice. The tanto gives a reinforced tip for punching through tough material. The double edge gives a symmetrical point that pierces cleanly, and it is the one to check your state law on, since a few states that allow automatics restrict daggers. Same handle, same mechanism, three edges.

03

A Handle Shaped for the Hand

The handle is 6061-T6 aluminum, 4.90 inches long, light enough to carry all day and rigid enough to keep the blade channel true. It is contoured where the fingers fall and textured where the palm sits, so the knife stays put when the hand is wet or gloved. At 3.49 ounces the whole knife disappears in a pocket.

04

The Slider

The contoured slider is what makes an OTF an OTF: push forward and the blade fires out and locks, pull back and it retracts. One thumb does both, which is the point when the other hand is holding the box, the rope or the dog. Our guide to types of automatic knives explains how a double-action mechanism works.

05

Everyday Carry, Done Simply

A good steel, three sensible edges, a handle that fits and a mechanism that works with one hand: the Spry is a knife built from decisions rather than features, which is why it carries so easily. If you want it smaller, the A5 Spry Mini puts the same design behind a 1.85-inch blade. And before ordering any automatic, check the 50-state guide for the rules where you live.

People Are Asking

What are the A5 Spry's specifications?

A 3.50-inch S35VN blade, a 4.90-inch 6061-T6 aluminum handle, and 3.49 ounces. Double-action OTF: the slider fires the blade out and pulls it back. Blade styles are drop point, tanto and double edge. The Bronze Edition runs MagnaCut.

Which A5 Spry blade style should I choose?

Drop point for most people and most cutting. Tanto for a stronger tip that punches through tough material. Double edge for a symmetrical point that pierces cleanly, where your state allows daggers. Some states that permit automatics restrict double-edged blades.

Is the A5 Spry legal in my state?

It is an automatic knife, so it depends on the state. Our 50-state guide covers where automatics are legal and the state pages cover blade limits. At 3.50 inches the Spry clears the common 3.5-inch lines, and the Spry Mini covers California.
